My Phone History.. from 2002 till 2009
To give you a little idea as to why i started this blog and whats it about, i think its worth taking you through my mobile phone history.
My first pride a joy and the one of the very few phones i had for more than a year.
The Nokia 7110, also known as the Matrix. Bought it for £75 of a friend, it was brick at the time but i didn't care, thought i was the Bees Knees, and with an O2 Genie sim which gave me 500 minutes of wap time and 300 text long as i topped up £10 a month, remember that deal.? Oh the wonders of on online to check the football scores while on the move. Loved it but in the end traded it in to get £100 of credit towards my first contract phone......
The Nokia 7610.
Nokia's first Megapixel phone before the megapixel war got out of control bough for £150.
Great build quality, easy to use and my first introduction to the world of Smart phones.. I remember spending £80 on a 1gig memory card... crazy i know.. and spending ours on Smart Movie to put 2 or 3 movies on it to watch on the train when i was visiting my family in London.
Ended up losing it on the train...
The Nokia 7600. Bought for £160.
It was all going great till i realised it was not a smart phone, i.e i could not install the Smart Movie app on it, had to go did last a month.. least i got my money back.
The P900i and followed by my next phone the P910i.
To me, if it was not for this phone, there would be no iPhone or N900 period... TO ME.
The P900 could do EVERYTHING i wanted at the time and them some. I have vivid memories of bringing girls back to my university room, turning on my PC (it was always on standby or hibernating), playing movies on my PC and setting the mood with some appropriate music while laying on the bed, all with my P900 using the Salling Clicker app. I loved the P900 so much that though i was a broke student i managed to save £300 to get P910i the year after, blame the introduction of 18month contracts. The P910 was even better, quality build, great for music and games... Vrally, Sky Force Reloaded and K-Rally, thank God i had a screen protector. ohh the days of paying £5 for 3mb of mobile internet time a month.
After the P910i I struggled to fined a phone that I could stick with... queue the list of phones, that although where great, i just wasn't 100% happy.
Nokia 6630 Nokia's first 3G phone.
I remember spending hours trying to get N-Gage games on this baby.. Tomb Raider was sweeet, till it got boring and i realised that i needed a qwerty key and a bigger screen, did last..
Orange SPV m3000 aka HTC TYTN.
My first Widows mobile, was great.. once you have spent hours following post on XDA-Developers to tweak it to your liking.
Last i heard nothing has changed with windows mobile.
ORANGE SPV m5000
This device and the Opera browser = best mobile internet device of its time, remember going to bed early just so i could spend some time surfing before i nod off.. too big though... and you literally looked like a twat when using it as a phone.
The Original iPhone.
Boy did the hype machine get me.. luckily i was working at O2 so i bought it for £100 (staff deal) and hacked it so i didn't have to go on contract. Soon as i realised it had no bluetooth to send files back and forth to my mac it had to go.. well i held on to it, unlocked it and so it for £230. Must say though I am glad Apple came out with the iPhone. Why?
Made me a mint in commission, ushered the era of unlimited* mobile internet and gave Nokia and the rest a well deserved kick up the backside
(*fair usage applies unlimited actually refers to 200mb a month)...lol sorry had to be done
(CURRENT PHONE)
Then i found what i was looking for.. The Nokia E90. got it for free on a staff contract.
Had it for the last 2 years and now looking for a replacement.
Took me a while to get used to it. I remember my first 2hrs constantly touching the screen hoping for a repose then realising its not a touch screen.
The build quality is second to none and it is soo robust, that it still alive after numerous drops
This phone got better and better was updates and apps, great screen for movies, great internet experience with Opera mobile and with the onset of Ovi messages, receiving push emails was sweet.
After 2 years of use i though it was time for a change and experimented with he following phones but to no avail.
HTC TOUCH HD
Create build, beautiful screen.... unresponsive as heck once the applications are piled on and Windows Mobile 6.1 felt like the windows mobile 5 on the TYTN... Had to go.
Though i must say, the BBC iPlayer on this was a beauty.
iPhone 3G
Friend lost his N95, got the iPhone 3G... hated the fact that he could do all the things he could on his N95 so set me a challenge of getting him a brand n95 in exchange for the iPhone 3g.. £120 on an N95 on ebay later the deal was done...
Tried soooo hard to make it my primary phone but it didn't work out. At this point i wanted to started developing for the iPhone because it was when i got the graduate opportunity as trainee programmer. Because of this, i still have the phone and will hopefully be using it to test my code as i learn how to develope for the platform.
Last pretender Nokia N95 8GB
Bought it of a mate for £55 after he got his upgrade to HTC Hero. It is in good condition too
Again i gave it 1 week to see if it could replace my beloved E90 but nope.. screen too small and I found it too hard without the qwerty keys.. small screens are definitely not for me.
This phone will be finding its way to my girlfriend asap... she wants it... she wants to take it... she wants me to give it to her...lol sorry couldn't resist again.
So currently i am still with my E90 after two years BUT have the following phone awaiting delivery
I have had a play with it at Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 and looks beautiful, plus i was actually surprised how small it was in reality (hey if you had the E90 for 2 years you will know what i am talking about).
No matter what happens, i will keep this phone (like i will also do with the iPhone 3g) and use it as a test unit for testing code once i start to tackle Meamo.
It has a great community behind it and i love the fact that its not restricted to the extent of the iPhone, bluetooth file transfer anybody?
Yep thats my phone history, once the N900 arrives, it will be 14 phones in 7 years...
Not bad at all... just your tropical average consumer...lol
